As the saying goes, "there’s strength in numbers." This is especially true for queer communities. We have made great advances in recent decades by uniting and demanding visibility and recognition for our families. Yet in the struggle for our rights, we often overlook the importance of statistical visibility. Being counted in demographic datasets, including official census data, improves the lives of queer people in many ways, including better access to healthcare, public services, representation and job markets. This presentation looks at challenges preventing same-sex couples from achieving statistical visibility worldwide, also showing how Berlin’s census data makes them count.
